Nursery Pre-Visits

The first day at Nursery can be quite daunting and difficult for both the child and their parents. It is important therefore to introduce your child to the Nursery and the staff before they are due to start.

We call this their ‘pre-visits’, and recommend the minimum of two. On the first pre-visit, you will be able to talk to the staff in your child’s room. They will be able to explain in greater detail the daily routine and activities that your child will be involved in.

It is nice to spend this visit with your child for the majority of the time, leaving him/her for a short period whilst you talk to the manager about the policies of the Nursery. This visit is usually for about an hour. The next visit is for a longer period of time, about two hours where you leave your child. This visit is very important, as the child will understand that ‘mummies and daddies don’t stay at Nursery’.

It will be a time where your child can be encouraged to join in with activities and get to know the staff that will be caring for them. More visits can be arranged if you and/or the staff feel that it would help your child to settle. All of these visits are free of charge.

Your child’s first day

On the first day a member of staff that you are familiar with, will greet you and then, once your child is settled with them, it is best to say goodbye and reassure your child that you will return. Even if this upsets the child it is easier for the staff to reinforce your words, as they are the words that your child will trust. It is reassurance that will aid your child’s settling in period.

It is quite usual for children to cry in situations that are unfamiliar with them, and starting Nursery is no exception. The settling in period varies from child to child. Some will find the first few weeks quite difficult, and then settle well. Others will settle quicker, but after a few weeks will regress slightly and their settling in time will then begin. There are some children who are confident and outgoing and settle with no time at all. If on a very rare occasion a child were so distressed we would not hesitate to contact their parent’s.

Please feel that you can phone the Nursery, as many times as you wish, the staff will always be honest with you about your child. This may help to put your mind at rest; the staff will tell your child that you phoned, which again will help to reassure them.
